Digital Gallery

The Digital Gallery is a collection of 20 biographies relating to a number of prominent individuals that have a special place in the history of Wales during the period 1939–1959.

Alongside the biographical information there are images from the National Library of Wales’ collections, including:

  • The Illingworth Collection
  • The Geoff Charles Photographic Collection
  • Framed Works of Art
  • The Photo Album Collection

The Gallery also displays images which have been obtained from external sources – either from relatives of the individuals or from institutions.

The individuals included have been selected because of the contribution they have made to significant historical events during this period in Wales and the UK.  These may include cultural events, such as W. S. Gwynn Williams and the establishment of the Llangollen International Eisteddfod; political developments, such as Aneurin Bevan and the NHS; and scientific advancements, for example Evan James Williams’ discovery in U-boat combat situations.

The Gallery is intended to be a learning tool and a resource that can be used, reused and re-purposed by teachers and youth leaders in Wales and beyond.
