Description

A leaflet provided for servicemen visiting Capetown, where Steven Ryan stopped off on his voyage to Bombay. He has marked the date as February 1943 - it took him a month to get from Britain to Capetown, and it would take a further two months to reach Bombay. Steven Ryan joined the Chepstow T.A. on 8 March 1938. He was sixteen years old, two years below the minimum age requirement, but he lied about his age to get in. His first postings included working with searchlight crews on the Home Front, and he went on to operate and train on anti-aircraft guns both at home and abroad.
