Description

Troop berthing card issued to Steven Ryan on embarking the SS Strathaird. Formerly a P&O passenger liner, the Strathaird was requisitioned as a troop ship during the Second World War. Steven Ryan completed part of his journey to India aboard the Strathaird. Steven Ryan joined the Chepstow T.A. on 8 March 1938. He was sixteen years old, two years below the minimum age requirement, but he lied about his age to get in. His first postings included working with searchlight crews on the Home Front, and he went on to operate and train on anti-aircraft guns both at home and abroad.
