Stores wagon blown over by landmine, Italy, 1940s Item Reference : cny02923
Description
Gilbert photographed a convoy of stores vehicles that had run across a landmine - his shadow is visible in the foreground as he takes the shot. This truck had been blown onto its roof, but no one was seriously injured. Gilbert got talking to the driver of the vehicle pictured, and found out he was from Swansea. Elizabeth Williams was born during the Second World War, whilst her father was away with the army. Her father, Gilbert Baiton, served with the Royal Engineers, and was attached to a medical corps. He travelled across Europe, and sent back many postcards, and brought back many photographs and souvenirs. He took part in the invasion of Anzio, and his main responsibility was setting up and maintaining the lighting systems at field hospitals and mobile dressing units.
