Description

A scrapbook in which Sandra Pickering's mother saved clippings from newspapers and magazines. Sandra's mother was very active in the Temperance Movement, and the family as a whole were very politically motivated. Her grandfather acted as agent for George Thomas, 1st Viscount Tonypandy, and James Callaghan, later to become Prime Minister, who was selected as Parliamentary Candidate for Cardiff South in 1943. Callaghan stayed at Sandra's house for a time, using her father's bicycle to go out canvassing. However, he paid nothing for his lodgings despite frequent requests, and was eventually asked to leave!
