Description
As a member of the 2nd Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry regiment John Kenneth Hughes was involved in the last major airborne assault before the end of the War. This was called Operation VARSITY and it took place on 24 March 1945 on the River Rhine in the Hammenkeln area using assault gliders. As a member of the 6th Airborne division within the regiment Ken and his comrades assisted the crossing by seizing several important objectives in a massive daylight airborne assault. During the Second World War John Kenneth Hughes trained as a radio signaller for the 2nd Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry regiment. Kenneth took part in the Battle at Hamminkeln and also in the D-Day capture of Pegasus Bridge on the night of 6 June 1944.
