Description
Marjorie Protheroe Jarrett joined the ATS on 21 March 1940. She was only 16 years old, two years below the lower age limit, a fact which caught up with her when she was 73, at her doctor's surgery. They thought she was 2 years older than she really was, as her official records had remained unchanged. Marjorie was based in Brecon when she met her future husband. They travelled to Neath to put in the banns on a Friday night - the registrar met them at Neath station on his bicycle, and they had to fill out the banns by bicycle lamp! They married the next day, and travelled back to Brecon where they had to stay in separate billets. She left the ATS in 1945, when pregnant with her daughter, and her husband was discharged from the army in 1946, one week before she was born.
