Jean Chugg, pictured with the Farm Dogs, 1940s Item Reference : cny03489
Description
Jean Chugg joined the Women's Land Army in 1945. She was posted to Whimple in Devon, and billeted in a large house next to the Whiteways Cider Factory. The girls were given lists of jobs, and would be picked up and dropped off by a driver at various farms, for tree pruning, haymaking and swede 'bashing' (swedes were harvested in winter, and would have to be 'bashed' together to knock the ice off). Jean loved her time in the Land Army, and stayed on until it was disbanded in 1949.
