A photograph of Vera, Jean and another friend of Sylvia Oats, from her time serving with the ATS, 1940s Item Reference : cny03515
Description
The inscription reads 'To Sylvia, Remember those Happy Days, love Vera'. Sylvia Oats joined the ATS in 1943, and went to Wrexham to complete her training. She was then posted to Prestatyn, where the army had taken over a holiday camp as a training base. Sylvia worked as a cook, and was very pleased to find she had a chalet to herself. Sylvia was later sent to Longmoor near Petersfield, where she cooked in the ladies' officers' mess, and eventually to a Military Police base at Ashvale near Farnborough. She thouroughly enjoyed the freedom of being away from home, and didn't want to return to Swansea when she was discharged in 1945.
