Description
Charles won a British Prisoner of War Sports Medal at Stalag IV-B, he received the medal for weight lifting. 'This man is forging ahead and setting a high standard to his fellows. He is a great sticker, and shows great promise. He has worked hard in getting the weight-lifting form of exercise going in the camp. He is responsible for building the equipment, and is also responsible for 50 men daily doing progressive exercise'. Charles Roberts of Denbigh was a brother to Fred Hughes of 9, Panton Hall, Denbigh. Fred was killed in an allied air raid on 20 August 1944 and is buried in Auschwitz municipal cemetery. Charles also served in the forces and returned safely to North Wales.
