Document received from the Army Council to coincide with medals that were awarded to Spr Fred Hughes for his service in the Second World War. Fred received the 1939-45 Star, Africa Star and War Medal 1939-45. Fred served with the Royal Engineers as a Sapper. During his time overseas he kept in regular contact with his parents and his sister, Edith. By the end of 1942 he was taken Prisoner of War by the Italians and was sent to a camp in Italy before being transferred to Austria. Fred's mother died in 1943 while he was a POW. He was killed in an allied air raid in 20th August 1944 and is buried in Auschwitz municipal cemetery, Austria. His brother Charles also served but returned safely to North Wales.
