Description
Gilbert Leach was unable to attend the presentation ceremony for the American Bronze Star 'for heroic achievements in connection with military operations against the enemy in Italy on April 21st, 1945'. This letter sent by Colonel John B. Ackerman states that the medal, citation and orders will be forwarded to Gilbert. Gilbert Leach from Rhyl was an apprentice chemist in Rhyl when he joined the 17th Field Regiment Royal Artillery becoming a Lance Bombardier. Gilbert Leach took part in the North African Landings before moving to Italy where he stayed until the end of the War. Gilbert Leach was awarded the American Bronze Star for heroic action in Italy on the 21st April 1945. He continued to operate his wireless under heavy and continuous shelling allowing the successful completion of the mission. In 1946 Gilbert was transferred to the Army reserves and returned to his career as a chemist.
