Description

Gilbert Leach from Rhyl applied to join the Armed Forces in 1939 but wasn't accepted until 1941. He volunteered to become a member of the Royal Artillery rather than the Infantry because as a child he had heard horrendous stories about life in the trenches during the First World War and was adamant that he didn't want to experience the same.
