Description
Gilbert Leach from Rhyl was an apprentice chemist when he joined the 17th Field Regiment Royal Artillery becoming a Lance Bombardier. Gilbert took part in the North African Landings before moving to Italy where he stayed until the end of the War. Gilbert was awarded the American Bronze Star for heroic action in Italy on 21 April 1945. He continued to operate his wireless under heavy and continuous shelling allowing the successful completion of the mission. In 1946 Gilbert was transferred to the Army reserves and returned to his career as a chemist.
