Description

Alfred Tubb joined his local TA, the 7th Battalion of the Queen's Royal Regiment, at Cannington in London, 0n 1 May 1939. He transferred to the Royal Artillery, trained as a machine gunner, and volunteered for duty on board convoys of merchant ships. In July 1941, Alfred was on the night watch aboard the SS North Devon off the East coast of England, when the ship was hit by a bomb, which burst the boilers and blew Alfred into the scuppers. He immediately got up, re-erected his gun and continued firing. The crew of the North Devon abandoned ship and were picked up by another vessel, but Alfred and his MRA colleague refused to go. The ship was listing very badly, but they managed to get her within towing distance of Immingham, at the mouth of the Humber.
