Postcard to Dilys Davies from Sgt. Stephens, Germany 1944, back [image 2 of 2]

Description

Eric keeps the content of his letter to his sweetheart light; restrictions by the camp authorities on what could be said in correspondance home prevented him from saying anything else. Eric writes that he saw a play put on by the prisoners and that despite the lack of resources available it was 'smashing'. Eric continues to keep the content of his letter to more ordinary subjects hoping that in doing so Dilys will not worry too much about him. Eric Stephens was a RAF flight engineer who was with the rest of his crew shot down by the German army while returning from a bombing raid over the Dutch/German border in 1944. After a week on the run he and his crew were captured and became prisoners of war (POWs). Between 1944 and 1945 Eric was moved to three POW camps.
