This letter was written after the torpedoing of the SS Empire Toucan by German submarine U47. Tudor Thomas wrote to his mother to say he and his crew were safe after being rescued by the British destroyer and brought back to Plymouth. He hoped he would be able to visit her in Penybont, but tragically he was unable to see his family before his final voyage. Hywel Tudor Thomas was a captain in the Merchant Navy during the Second World War.
